This poem is one I have written recently that captures the reclamation of self. I like to compare this to the destruction of wildfires. Surging heat and fire that seemingly can only bring destruction help start a cycle of rejuvenation for the areas they burn.
The oftentimes dead organic material of the forest floor, turns to ash making way for the growth of new plants that before, would not have been able to flourish due to the thick carpet of the decaying forest above them.
This poem explores renewal on a cellular level and how normal biological processes of the human body can relate to the emotional and spiritual recapturing of yourself.
One day on a molecular level, maybe my body won’t be so drawn to you anymore
My hair can be cut and will grow until there is none left on my head that has been touched by you
My skin will regenerate, cell by cell until not a single one has felt your breath your kiss or your touch
Blood will continue to pump through my heart and all throughout my body until it’s healed and patched my brokenness and all the wounds you’ve left
Air will fill my lungs one breath at a time, and I’ll breathe you out of me on each one
Tears will cleanse my soul, one drop at a time until it’s been rendered new again, free of your words and how you’ve hurt me and all your so-called love
Because you were never the one keeping me alive anyways…
I was.
